Charcoal Necklace

This piece is part of the collection of my dissertation for my final year of Architecture BA Hons degree designed around the exploration of materiality after discovering the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor who designs with the material and its properties at the forefront. This piece was directly inspired by his Bruder Klaus chapel in Germany which utilised tree trunks in a tee-pee like structure to cast the internal form while layers of concrete were poured on the exterior as the building envelope. The really interesting part is when he burned these tree trunks on the inside until they were charred ghost impressions on the internal walls with the fire and smoke escaping from a small hole in the cathedral like spire. This hole in the roof also allows the rain to fall into the building just where the shrine is positioned. This use of material and form to create lasting connections and reactions with nature for us to experience is the basis of my exploration with charred branches which in this instance have been left un-treated to disregard practical wearability in favour of leaving a physical impression on the wearer.
