Two-Storey Extension, Norfolk.
Project Location: Whinburgh, Norfolk.
A two storey extension to the side of a detached dwelling in Whinburgh. The proposal for the extension centred on allowing the cottage to evolve for the family with the addition of a master bedroom including walk-in-wardrobe, and an additional two ensuites added to the first floor. At ground floor the internal layout was carefully considered to provide a multifunctional space for a gym/living room area, and a beautiful shower room. Bi-folding doors to the rear maximise the natural light and connection to the outside, with views over the garden and easy access to the pool. The detailing of the timber frame windows with glazing bars and ironmongery to match the existing provide subtle but strong links to the existing cottage and give continuity to the dwelling as a whole.
The external appearance was designed to be in-keeping with the existing and enhance the character of the cottage. The roofline sits just below the existing ridge to keep the extension subservient to the original, but with reclaimed clay pantiles used to blend the new roof with the old.
Horizontal cedar cladding was pre-treated to ensure the natural silvering of the wood is preserved as evenly as possible, with the square edge boarding profile chosen which adds texture with this subtle depth of the boards.
